Don't Be Annoying
Why You Should Never Disable Right Click
So you want to ensure that people don't steal your dolls by disabling right click. It seems like a cool feature, and you've seen it around. Bad idea! Disabling right-click causes major navigation problems and changes the way people expect your website to work. . Disabiling right-click disables normal functions besides just "copy". Often I use the right click function to allow me to go back if a website is in frames, or to open a link in a new window, or to veiw the properties of the link itself. If right-click is disabled in site with frames, I can't go back correctly by just using the "back button" at the top of the browser because it targets the mother frame only. Providing your own back button won't solve the problem either because most people only have this link once on the page and it's usually hidden at the bottom- meaning if I accidently clicked the "over 18 dolls" I would have scroll all the way throug that content to find the "back" button because you disabled right click. Disabling this vital function causes bad accessibility and bad navigation. Overall, it's a poorly looked upon and extremely bad web design practice! BAD BAD BAD!
People can get around any method you use to prevent them from copying or saving your images anyway. Most dollers that visit your website have a website of their own meaning they have some skill in coding websites. Basically they are somewhat computer savy and know where the "print screen" button is. Not only this, they obviously have skills in imaging software and can manipulate any other attempts you have made to thwart their efforts (like putting a background image behind the dolls- it takes me a matter of seconds to cut a doll away from a background image). Forcing people to e-mail you to adopt a doll that you say is adoptable is just rediculous. And if that fails, there is always "view source" which enables someone to view your code and find the image url directly. And even if THAT fails- I have the web developer Firefox extension installed which shows me all the urls to all the images on the page.
So don't insult your users by pretending you are actually preventing someone from stealing your dolls. Most people in the dolling community will be respectful of your rules, so this really isn't neccessary. Trust me, your dolls aren't stolen because you disabled right click, it's more that fear keeps people in line. They won't steal your images because if they do everyone in the dolling community will shun them. But like I already said, most people in the dolling world are respectful of doll adoption and linking back. So essentially all you accomplish by disabling right click is making your site harder to navigate and pushing people away.
